Your gateway to world-renowned diving locations
Semporna is a sleepy coastal fishing village located on the East Coast of Sabah, where the most exciting event is visiting the local villages and feasting on seafood. However, if you are willing to cross the threshold Narnia-style… Semporna becomes the gateway to arguably one of the best diving experiences in the world.
Wall dives, pelagics, muck, macro… volcano?!
Travel through the island clusters and you will have the opportunity to dive iconic locations such as the legendary Sipadan Island, home to the largest barrier reef in South East Asia with amazing marine biodiversity and an awe-inspiring coral wall dropping more than 2,000 meters straight down. Oh yeah!
Love muck diving? Explore the muck diving mecca, Mabul Island, or even Kapalai Island where you can encounter amazing sea-life such as blue-ringed octopus, porcelain crabs, clown frog fish, harlequin ghost pipefish, dwarf stonefish, seahorses, nudibanchs, turtles, moray eels. and many more! An awe-inspiring sight is the rare and precious black corals at base of the volcanically formed Mantabuan Island which is also home to manta rays (especially when the current picks up).
Fan of macro diving? Head off to Sibuan Island where you dive amongst mandarin fish, pygmy seahorses, hammerhead nudibranchs, pharaoh cuttlefish, frogfish, and the likes. If that does not satisfy your appetite, head to Pom Pom Island for more macro diving, which is also a nesting site for hawksbill and green turtles typically around end-April to August.
If you want an adrenaline rush, the amazing wall dives with some strong (washing machine) currents at Mataking would be a treat. You are likely to be greeted with large pelagics such as reef sharks, hammerheads, manta rays and eagle rays!
Wait… there’s more?
Six fantastic islands with over 80 dive sites, and the experiences do not stop there. Take the chance to dive and live on a decommissioned converted oilrig at Seaventures right in the heart of Mabul and Sipadan. Where else can you gear up, take an external elevator down to a waiting boat or just take the plunge into the macro paradise beneath the platform.
There’s always something for every diving level around Semporna. Take a chance to wake up in this sleepy town!
