Here are some of our favorite dive sites 🙂
Lekuan 3 :
Probably one of Bunaken’s best site where you start your descend on a nice sandy slope peppered with underwater pinnacles which continues to a wall drop to over 200m, decorated with gorgonian fans and big sponges. Groups of jacks and barracudas are often sighted here, along with the smaller residents such as the cleaner shrimps and a host of nudibranchs and flatworms.
Mandolin :
IDescending down alongside one of Bunaken’s typically colorful wall, and you will soon realize that in the 20-45m range, there are more single whip corals that your eyes can take in. Love the big stuff? Be hopeful to bump into some maori wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, mappa pufferfish, barracudas, and white-tip reef sharks. There is also no shortage of macro stuff to keep you amused with the whip corals playing host to shrimps and whip gobies.
Sachiko’s Pont :
Yet another example of Bunaken’s great wall dives – where you witness an incredible variety of healthy corals and marine life. Currents can get strong here, which on the flip side, attracts the pelagics. It is common to find yourself alongside napoleon wrasse, schooling bluefin trevallies, and even some green turtles. Other critters commonly found here include moray eels, sea snakes, leaf scorpionfish, nudibranchs, crabs and shrimps.
BMJ :
Going down this site you might just think to yourself “where the hell am I?”. BMJ directly exposed to the bad season storms to which you will you see broken corals and rubbles everywhere as a result of the aftermath. However, if you are a macro-lover, this is a paradise for nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, boxer crabs, mantis shrimps and many more!
Batu Hitam :
This reef consists of a sandy slope with coral patches that finishes off as a little wall. This is where you will usually see cuttlefish, ribbon eels, leaf fish, emperor shrimps, decorator crabs, nudibranchs and various pipefish. To many, this is the ideal complement to the reefs, walls and fish action you would have seen from the other dive sites.
Nearest Airport :
Sam Ratulangi (Manado) International Airport (IATA: MDC)
Notes :
Airport transfers to the dive resorts which takes ~1.5 hours by road are typically included in the trip itinerary for your convenience 🙂
