Mantanani or known by the locals as “Mermaid island” is gaining popularity among divers, as fast as its tourist arrivals. Just a couple of hours from Kota Kinabalu, the 3 island groups offers postcard scenery, cool breezes and a serene environment, surrounded by crystal turquoise waters teeming with vibrant reef life. It used to be a hot spot for spotting dugongs, hence its name “Mermaid island”.

Dugongs (a.k.a manatees) if you are really lucky, blacktip sharks, juvenile turtles abound, and macro diving (seahorses, imperial shrimps, blue-ringed octopus, nudibranches). And not to mention, its clear visibility and beautiful coral reefs.

Gilly Reef :
Descend into the sloping reef and you will be greeted by the sight of ribbon eels, nudibranchs, lionfish and marbled stingrays.
Pehen Rock :
This site offers quite an unusual topography thriving with bottom dwellers. Excitingly large giant clams congregate here, amid a school of batfish and occassionally, green turtles.
Sandy Bar Point :
Dive down into a seascape carpetted by a mix of pristine hard and soft corals. Here, you can expect to see a variety of tropical reef fishes, and even reef sharks or turtles if you are lucky.
