Bordering international waters in the Straits of Malacca, sits a little button-like rocky island called Jarak Island (meaning Distant Island). With a boat ride of 2 hours from mainland Lumut, Jarak Island is a popular spot for local anglers, and not so much for scuba diving given the distance. However, diving down, and you will know exactly why local diving insiders dare mention that Jarak Island could rival the islands of the East Coast.

Diving here is largely determined by the experience of the dive crew to decide the ideal location premised on weather, visibility, and currents. Currents here can get strong due to its location in the open ocean therefore experienced is required to dive Jarak Island. Nonetheless, looking down from your boat before you gear up, you could almost ways see the reefs below at 30m (98ft) and instantly know that the visibility is going to be amazing.

As you descend down after a back roll you are likely to be greeted by a myriad of rich marine life with hard corals dominating the seascape. You will be so busy taking in the scenery that you are often not going to bother spending time looking for macro critters.

On the top side, you may be entertained by the sailfish’s acrobatic dance as it breaches the surface. Finally realizing why this hidden gem of a place is a popular location for anglers.
